As businesses continue to shift towards the digital landscape, it has become more crucial than ever to secure network resources and protect data from cyber threats. Network security groups (NSGs) are virtual firewalls that can help limit traffic to your virtual machines (VMs) in a virtual network, ensuring that your resources are well-protected. In this video tutorial with Neeraj Kumar, we'll take a closer look at NSGs and what they can do for your business.

Learn moreA network security group is a virtual firewall that allows you to limit traffic to your virtual machines (VMs) in a virtual network. It is mainly used to restrict inbound and outbound traffic to the VMs.
To create a network security group, you need to go to the Azure portal and select the Virtual Network option. Then you can select the NSG option and create a new NSG. After creating an NSG, you can associate it with a subnet or a NIC (network interface card).
NSG effective rules refer to the rules that are actually in effect after combining all the applicable rules in the NSG hierarchy. These rules help you understand the traffic allowed or denied to your VMs.
By default, an NSG has three inbound rules that allow all traffic within the virtual network, traffic from a load balancer to any network in the backend, and deny all other traffic. In addition, there are default outbound rules that allow all communication between virtual networks and the internet, while denying all other traffic.
No, the default rules in an NSG cannot be deleted. However, you can override these rules by creating new rules that have higher priority than the default rules.
